A friend at work told me "don't go to doctors you always come out sicker than you go in." At first I thought she meant that because usually sick people go to doctors that the waiting rooms are loaded with germs. While this is true, it isn't what she meant. So I wasn't feeling well I had a sinus infection. I get them every winter and although I should have learned I did not. I over used my nasal spray.Stupid I know. But every time I go to the doctor I feel that I have opened a can of worms.
It was a new doctor as my insurance has changed and I really no longer liked my current doctor,so I changed. I really like this new guy he is relaxed and listened. Since he does not know my medical history He wanted me to have a physical. Terrific!
So from a sinus infection, I mention to him I think I might have a hernia. My prior doctor looked at it said in the location it could be my liver or a hernia-this was a year ago.She said let's get some blood work done, and we'll go on from there. She wasn't concerned so neither was I.
I never got a call about the blood results so I wasn't worried at all. When I get a letter in the mail from my doctors office about a month later , then playing phone tag with her assistant turns out I am vitamin D deficient. No explanation to how that occurred but go and start taking vitamin D . That was that until about a month later. Make an appointment to check your vitamin D level. So I call for an appointment ,Sorry the doctor is on vacation. I call 2 weeks later. I am not calling for a "sick" appointment so I have to wait 3 weeks. I'm Ok with that, remember I hate doctors.
Two weeks and six days later I get a call from that doctors office we are sorry but the doctor has to cancel your appointment. I have to call back and "no" they cannot make a sooner appointment we have to come in three weeks unless you are sick! I think to my self this is what I am trying to find out! Ok so three weeks later I take a step out my front door and injure my knee. I go to the E.R. and get this ridiculously big brace to wear, and cancel my doctor appointment to check on my vitamin D issue. I am told to wait 4-6 weeks then see another doctor that the one at the hospital referred me to. I decide to call in three because it usually take at least three to see a specialist. Three weeks later I get a call from the specialist office. You know it They did not receive notice from my primary care doctor, I have to see her first! The doctor in the hospital gave me the referral! Doesn't matter! Here we go again three weeks because you are not coming in for a "sick" visit. But I am in pain. So three weeks later my doctor isn't in. I give up. Stop using the brace and hope for the best.
After all this begins the story with my new doctor (another can of worms). My sinus infection gets better and maybe I should of left it at that but like I said I'm a slow learner. The doctor isn't in on the date you requested would you want to see the PA ,for your physical? Sure. Again 3 weeks.
Now I am sitting on an exam table, giving my life story two kids, one gall bladder surgery etc. Yes, my high blood pressure medications blah. blah. blah.
I end up with a fist full of referral cards. We are also giving you a higher dose on your B.P meds. I will see you in a month to see how its working for you. All this because I had a stupid sinus infection.
The P.A. wants me to do as many of the referral cards as possible before my next month check up. But I should't wait on the the surgeon one, we really should fix that hernia! My original doctor was so unconcerned I thought it wasn't a problem .
So I go to the surgeon and he is very nice. I have pre-op testing a week from now .So now I get a call saying my blood sugar is very high the day before testing I have to go in and "talk" about diet and some new medication. Cool . (sarcasm!).So now maybe I won't get surgery so soon. Let's see what can of worms the pre-op testing opens! Damn! She was right I am way sicker after seeing the doctor than I was when I walked in.I think no more physicals ,for me. I am sicker every time I go and I thought physicals were to help prevent sickness! Rats!!! Last thing I am asking for prayers that if I do get surgery it goes as well as the doctor thinks it will.
